The books of the Blood Mage Chronicles (Shadow of a Slave, Shadow of a Mage, and Shadow of a King) spent a long time in my head before they ever got put down on paper.
I have had a passion for fantasy for as long as I can remember, beginning with the likes of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and later expanding into the works of Sarah Douglass and Brandon Sanderson. But what really inspired me to write The Blood Mage Chronicles was The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.
If you've read both then you'll probably spot some similarities. I loved the concept of a hero that was too good - and knew it. I liked the gritty, hard reality of The Name of the Wind where things don't always go right, and the hero isn't always heroic, and that's where inspiration for the Blood Mage Chronicles came. I wanted to write a dark fantasy that really got inside people's heads.
I also wanted to explore a magic system that had a more scientific basis than some of the wand-waving that is used in the genre. Brandon Sanderson was a key role-model for this because his magic systems always have a logic and consistency to them. Therefore, the magic system in The Blood Mage Chronicles is very rigid and adheres (mostly) to the laws of thermodynamics.
It was a lot of fun to write, and I hope that readers get just as much enjoyment from it.
